About Me
My name is Avrael Perreault, and I am married and have two children of my own. I have experienced both a hospital birth and a home birth, and have breastfed both my children. I have a passion for the amazing journey a woman and her partner go through during pregnancy, birth and babyhood. I see my role as a doula to be supportive of the woman and her partner, and to assist them in making the transition into these new stages of life.
A doula is a valuable resource to have during the prenatal period, as she can answer general pregnancy and baby-related questions for the mother and her partner, as well as provide options for perinatal resources such as pregnancy or postpartum exercise classes, prenatal classes, and mom and baby groups; resources that a medical provider such as a doctor or midwife might not know about.
Having a doula present while labouring helps to reduce the length of time that a woman labours, and helps her to manage her pain more effectively. I believe that every birth experience is special and unique, regardless of how it happens, and that every woman should be proud of the incredible thing she has accomplished.
In the post-partum period, the mother and new family have to adjust to a very different life, and my role is to help ease that adjustment, by “mothering the mother” and providing the support that, in past generations, would have been provided by an extended network of family.
I have had training (DONA) in birth support and postpartum support. I have experience providing breastfeeding support and I have had basic breastfeeding support training. I will be taking further training as a Breastfeeding Educator in fall 2010. I have personal experience with some of the difficulties that can come with establishing breastfeeding, and in overcoming those challenges to develop a successful nursing relationship.
